The story

Since he was small, Jason Eaves has dreamed his way into Imageo, where the sky ripens to pomegranate, water swims through the air in the shape of fish, and two young men can kiss under a tree without anyone turning to look. Every night, a girl named Virginia meets him there. Every morning, he wakes with only a haze of it.

The night before his graduation, Virginia tells him why his visits matter. The doors between their worlds have been shut for a hundred years, and some in her world want them sealed for good. Tomorrow, under the full moon, she means to cross to him.

Jason wakes in Los Angeles to everything he would have to leave behind: the grandmother who raised him, the one friend he has come out to, and the speech he is to give as student speaker, written twice. One is a clean copy everybody's parents will love. The other is honest. Each time he drifts off that day, Imageo pulls him back, and the news is worse: Virginia has been taken.

Two worlds

Imageo

A festival under a pomegranate sky. Paper lanterns in seven colors, flame spun between palms, water shaped into fish swimming over the children's heads. Nobody here is surprised by any of it, and nobody is surprised to see Jason.

Los Angeles

Gray light through blinds, a hand-lettered banner, jacaranda trodden into the sidewalk, four hundred folding chairs. Nothing is wrong here, and the two people who love Jason most live here. But he always sees it through something: blinds, a windshield, a screen, his own glasses.
